MY WIFE INSULTS ME, WHAT SHOULD I DO?

My Wife Insults Me. What Shall I Do?

A Biblical Response to Verbal Disrespect in Marriage

"Every marriage has disagreements. But when disagreement turns into disrespect, the home begins to lose its peace."

INTRODUCTION

One of the most painful questions I receive during my counseling clinics comes from husbands who ask with tears in their eyes:

"My wife insults me. What shall I do?"

Sometimes the insults happen privately.

Sometimes they happen before the children.

Sometimes before friends.

Sometimes in church.

Sometimes on social media.

For many men, the pain is not merely the words themselves.

It is the feeling of losing honour in the eyes of the person they vowed to love.

Yet before we rush to blame the wife, we must pause.

Every painful behaviour has a history.

Every reaction has a root.

The Bible teaches us not merely to treat symptoms but to discern causes.

Today, we shall examine this issue carefully—from God's perspective.

Not emotionally.

Not culturally.

But biblically.

FIRST, DON'T RESPOND WITH EGO

One insult can destroy years of trust if answered wrongly.

The natural man says,

"Give her a taste of her own medicine."

The Kingdom man asks,

"Lord, what response glorifies You?"

Proverbs 15:1 reminds us:

"A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."

Notice something remarkable.

The verse does not say the other person deserves softness.

It says softness changes the atmosphere.

When dignity leaves the room, somebody must become the thermostat instead of another thermometer.

SECOND, ASK THIS IMPORTANT QUESTION

When did the insults begin?

Very few women begin marriage insulting their husbands.

Something changed.

Was it...

  • accumulated disappointment?
  • repeated neglect?
  • emotional abandonment?
  • financial pressure?
  • unresolved betrayal?
  • years of unheard pain?
  • unmet expectations?
  • poor communication?

This does not justify disrespect.

But understanding the root helps healing.

Remember:

Behaviour is often the language of unresolved pain.

THIRD, NEVER NORMALISE DISRESPECT

Some men laugh it off.

Some say,

"That's just how women talk."

No.

Respect is God's design.

Ephesians 5 does not only command husbands to love.

It also instructs wives to respect.

Respect is not about superiority.

It is about honouring God's order.

A home where honour disappears slowly becomes a battlefield.

FOURTH, EXAMINE YOURSELF HONESTLY

Jesus said,

"First remove the plank from your own eye..."

Ask yourself difficult questions.

Have I become:

  • emotionally unavailable?
  • verbally harsh?
  • controlling?
  • irresponsible?
  • dishonest?
  • addicted to work?
  • spiritually passive?

Sometimes insults are sinful.

Sometimes they are desperate cries from a wounded heart.

Humility opens doors pride never can.

FIFTH, NEVER RETALIATE WITH INSULTS

Many husbands answer insult with louder insult.

Now both spouses become enemies.

The Bible says,

"Do not repay evil for evil..."

Romans 12 teaches us to overcome evil with good.

Silence is sometimes stronger than shouting.

Wisdom often speaks after emotions have gone to sleep.

SIXTH, CHOOSE THE RIGHT TIME FOR CONVERSATION

Never discuss respect during the argument.

Conflict is the worst classroom.

Wait until emotions settle.

Then gently say,

"When those words were spoken, I felt deeply hurt. I want us to build a marriage where we can disagree without dishonouring one another."

Notice the language.

Not accusation.

Not condemnation.

Not revenge.

But vulnerability.

Healthy marriages are built upon honest conversations, not emotional explosions.

SEVENTH, LOOK BENEATH THE WORDS

Insults often hide deeper emotions.

Sometimes the real message is:

"I feel ignored."

"I don't feel important."

"I feel abandoned."

"I no longer feel safe."

"I am exhausted."

"I don't feel heard."

If we only fight the words, we miss the wound.

EIGHTH, INVITE GOD INTO THE CONVERSATION

Marriage is not merely psychological.

It is spiritual.

James reminds us that the tongue is powerful.

Only the Holy Spirit can truly tame it.

Pray together.

Read Scripture together.

Invite God's presence back into your conversations.

Homes change when prayer enters where arguments once lived.

NINTH, ESTABLISH NEW COMMUNICATION RULES

Every healthy marriage needs boundaries.

For example:

  • No name-calling.
  • No shouting.
  • No public humiliation.
  • No sarcasm.
  • No bringing up forgiven failures.
  • No threatening divorce during disagreements.
  • Speak truth with grace.

Rules protect relationships.

Without boundaries, emotions become dictators.

TENTH, SEEK HELP IF THE PATTERN CONTINUES

Repeated verbal abuse should never be ignored.

Wise couples seek counsel before resentment becomes permanent.

Proverbs tells us that there is safety in the multitude of counsellors.

Strong marriages are not the ones without problems.

They are the ones humble enough to seek help.

A WORD TO WIVES

If you happen to be reading this, may I gently speak to you?

Your husband may not always be right.

But words can either build the man you married or slowly destroy him.

Respect does not mean silence.

It means expressing disagreement with dignity.

Correction without honour creates resistance.

Truth wrapped in grace produces transformation.

A WORD TO HUSBANDS

Leadership is not demanding respect.

Leadership is creating an atmosphere where respect naturally flourishes.

Love deeply.

Listen patiently.

Repent quickly.

Lead spiritually.

Pray consistently.

Many wives become softer when they consistently feel safe, valued, and genuinely loved.

KINGDOM PRINCIPLE

Never fight to win the argument.

Fight to protect the relationship.

The enemy is never your spouse.

The enemy is whatever seeks to destroy the covenant God established.

Remember:

Your wife is not your opponent.

She is your covenant partner.

FIVE PRACTICAL ACTION STEPS

1. Refuse to retaliate immediately.

Respond after prayer, not after provocation.

2. Schedule an honest conversation.

Choose peace over pressure.

3. Discover the hidden pain.

Seek understanding before seeking victory.

4. Rebuild emotional intimacy.

Spend intentional time together away from conflict.

5. Pray together daily.

The family that kneels together often learns to speak differently to one another.

CONCLUSION

If your wife insults you, don't allow bitterness to become your new identity.

Respond with wisdom.

Search your own heart.

Address the issue lovingly.

Protect your dignity without destroying hers.

Above all, invite Christ into the centre of your marriage.

Because when Jesus rules the heart, the tongue gradually follows.

CLOSING PRAYER

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of marriage.

Heal every home wounded by harsh words.

Teach husbands to lead with humility and love.

Teach wives to communicate with honour and grace.

Where bitterness has taken root, plant forgiveness.

Where disrespect has grown, restore honour.

Let every conversation reflect the character of Christ.

May our homes become places where truth is spoken in love and where peace reigns above pride.

In Jesus' mighty Name,

Amen.
